Comparison between induction melting furnace and electric arc furnace

Induction furnace smelting has the following characteristics:

1) The yield of alloy elements is high

The high temperature of electric arc furnace is used to melt the burden. Under the action of high temperature electric arc, the loss of alloy elements volatilization and oxidation is much higher than that of induction heating. The loss of alloy elements in induction furnace is lower than that in EAF.

2) The amount of liquid steel carburization is small in smelting process

The induction furnace is based on the principle of induction heating to melt the metal charge without carburizing the molten steel. Electric arc furnace relies on graphite electrode to heat furnace charge through electric arc. The molten steel will be carburized after melting.

In general, when smelting high alloy Ni Cr steel, the lowest carbon content is 0.06% in EAF and 0.02% in induction furnace. The amount of carbon addition in EAF and induction furnace is 0.02% and 0.01% respectively

3) Improvement of metallurgical reaction conditions by electromagnetic stirring

The effect of electromagnetic stirring in induction furnace improves the uniformity of temperature and chemical composition of molten steel. The effect of electromagnetic stirring improves the kinetic conditions of chemical reaction. The electric arc furnace itself has no electromagnetic stirring function, even if the low frequency electromagnetic stirrer is added, its effect is still not as good as the induction furnace.

4) Compared with electric arc furnace, induction furnace has the disadvantages of low slag temperature, poor dephosphorization function, unable to use scrap and high power consumption.

In conclusion, in the production of high alloy steel, induction furnace is better than electric arc furnace.
