Characteristics of slag in induction melting furnace

Compared with three kinds of EAF, its characteristics are as follows

1) Slag temperature is lower than liquid steel temperature

The heat source of induction melting furnace comes from the heat transformed by the induced current in the molten steel, which makes the slag form slag and keep the temperature. Therefore, the slag temperature is lower than the liquid steel temperature, also known as cold slag.

The slag can be heated directly by electric arc and current in EAF, and the temperature of slag can be higher than that of molten steel.

Because of the low temperature of slag in induction furnace, the ability and effect of chemical reaction are limited, which is the disadvantage of induction furnace smelting.

2) The specific contact area of slag steel is small with small amount of slag

The slag consumption of medium frequency induction furnace is about 1% - 3%, that of electric arc furnace is 3% - 5% and that of dephosphorization is more than 5%. The specific contact area of slag steel in EAF is 3-5 times of that in induction furnace. Therefore, its refining capacity is far greater than that of induction furnace.

3) Slag has few functions

According to different functions, EAF smelting can make foamed slag to play the role of slag covering, reduce power consumption and shorten the smelting cycle, and make strong deoxidization slag such as white slag, carbide slag and so on. Because of the low temperature of slag, it is impossible to achieve the desired metallurgical effect through different types of slag.
